Electronic Radio Sculptures by Jason Homer,

originator of the Octagod.

Each of these sculptures is a fully functional, high fidelity FM radio receiver. The power supply and speaker are separate. But other than that, almost the entire structure is made up working, low voltage radio circuitry.

These pieces were created with the idea that people should be given a more intimate relationship with the technology that serves them. Nowadays electronics are put into integrated circuits, which in turn are put in still other boxes. The end result is that we have lost touch with the basic circuits and basic electronics upon which we depend. Sculpted radios destroy this barrier of mystery, while simultaneously opening a new window of understanding.

To see a working radio of this kind means witnessing an almost spiritual transformation of energy. Here the invisible is transformed into the sensuous. In these works radio waves are first turned into electricity then further transformed into audible sounds and music. Here the mystery of technical electronics becomes an even greater mystery of how vibrations can move through empty space, air, wires and finally the brain itself. Here the mystery of technical electronics becomes a mystery of art and physics, a mystery which indeed borders on the spiritual.

The following pictures, presented in chronological order, also show the development of an artistic idea. The first pieces explore the relationship between working radios and sculpture, while the later pieces explore the relationship between workings radios, sculpture and the human body. And then, finally, I begin to explore the relationships between working radios, sculpture, the human form, and specific mathematical shapes.
